Jahseh Dwayne Ricardo Onfroy who is popular by his stage name XXXTENTACION is an American rapper and songwriter. Jahseh has been dealing with controversy since he first started his rap career at the age of 16 because of several legal issues including assault and battery which landed him in jail for six months to one year before being released early on probation for good behavior.

“Now let’s just say I fail to reach my dreams because I die a tragic death or something. Jahseh Onfroy was born on January 23, 1998, in Plantation, Florida. His parents Dwayne Ricardo Onfroy and Cleopatra Eretha Dreena Bernard were immigrants from Cuba and Jamaica. He said in an interview on The Beat that he has a mixed ancestry of Egyptian, Indian, Syrian, and Italian as well.

He grew up with his grandparents in Pompano Beach, Florida, and Lauderhill, Florida because of his mother’s problem and he tried to stab a man who was trying to assault his mother when he was only six years old and was even put in a youth program but his family denied saying that the incident never occurred.

In 2008, his father was found guilty of his involvement in drugs so he was sentenced to 9 years imprisonment and deported to Jamaica in 2016.

He endured a tough childhood with his mother facing drug addiction and other struggles while also losing her battle to cancer when he was five years old. Onfroy later faced legal issues including an arrest for robbery at age 14 and another for false imprisonment two years later.

In April of 2015, the then 18-year-old Jahseh Dwayne Ricardo Onfroy found himself in trouble again after he allegedly beat up his girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend because she refused to leave him alone.

His Education and Interest in Music

There is no information on which school he went to but he started getting interested in music after his aunt made him attend school and church choir but he tried to beat a student so he was later kicked out of the school choir. After that, he went to Margate Middle School but he would always get himself into fights and arguments so he was later expelled from the school.

He then started listening to and liking rock and metal songs and his mother put him in Sheridan House Family Ministries after he was expelled from middle school and there he learned to play guitar and piano.

Then he went to Piper High School but he dropped out of the school when he was in grade ten and he has said in interviews or podcasts that he always get into fights and he was not good in sports and was depressed in his school days.


In October 2016, Onfroy (Real name of X) released his second album titled “17”. It debuted at the top of Billboard’s Heatseekers Albums and Independent Albums charts.

The following month he partnered with clothing company Supreme to release a line of white T-shirts that featured various designs such as “Stay Trash” or “F*ck Everybody Else.” In February 2017, however, around when 17 was about to be certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), Spotify removed it from their library because they deemed its lyrics too explicit for listeners under 18 years old.

This move resulted in many people who supported him accusing Spotify of censorship due to the recent United States policies imposed on immigrants from Mexico which were enacted in the same year.

On June 18th Onfroy announced he would release a second studio album titled ?.

In September 2018, Drake applauded him as one of hip-hop’s most exciting new voices and honored him with an award for Best New Hip Hop Artist during OVO Fest 2018 in Toronto.

The album ? was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Rap Album at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards, Onfroy still needs to be nominated and confirmed. It was released in 2019 and ended up being X’s final album.

On January 23rd, 2019 Jahseh Dwayne Ricardo Onfroy was announced as one of two recipients of XXL’s Freshman Class award in recognition of his talent and potential.

On March 31st, 2019 Jahseh Dwayne Ricardo Onfroy has won a 2018 MTV Video Music Award posthumously with Travis Scott after dying on June 18th, 2018. This is his first career award nomination which he will not take home but it brings him more attention by winning this prestigious award before an audience of millions watching worldwide live television broadcast during Madison Square Garden’s annual ceremony Monday, August 20th, 2019.
