Lately, there have been a lot of questions regarding the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise’s future as of late because of the issues regarding Johnny Depp. We all know that the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is incredibly successful and lucrative so it wasn’t a surprise that Disney is planning to have a sixth movie in line.
However, Johnny Depp isn’t included in Disney’s plan for the future of the franchise. So, Disney has decided to star Margot Robbie as a candidate for the leading role. Now you must be wondering if Johnny Depp will be replaced by Margot Robbie in the Pirates of the Caribbean.
At the present, it has not been confirmed whether Margot Robbie will be replacing Johnny Depp or not but still the possibility of her starring in a new role for the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is in the talks with Disney. There is a high possibility that she will not be portraying the role of Captain Jack Sparrow but perhaps a new character in a spin-off in the upcoming movie.
Not a lot of actors could fill in Depps’ shoes in a leading role so to say that Margot will replace Depp is going to be quite the pressure for her. So, we believe that she might be playing a new character in a spin-off story perhaps connecting with the greater Pirates of the Caribbean narrative sometime in the future.
Margot Robbie could replace Johnny Depp in the Pirates of the Caribbean
Amber Heard made serious allegations of abuse towards her ex-husband Johnny Depp not long ago. Since then the megastar that has put the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise on the map with his portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow has lost a lot of roles due to the negative reputation that the allegation produced.
As a result, Johnny Depp was dropped from the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise by Disney even though he had helped the five movies earn more than a billion dollars at the box office. However, Disney isn’t going to pass up the chances of making more money by producing the sixth movie with or without Johnny Depp because the Pirates of the Caribbean is one of the most lucrative franchises in the entire movie industry.
So, another big-name star like Margot Robbie comes in as Disney believes that she could possibly bring more to the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Now, you must be wondering if she will really replace Johnny Depp in the upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean movies.
However, you shouldn’t worry about that because it hasn’t been confirmed and there are rumors that Margot Robbie is still in talks with Disney regarding the possibility of her starring in the Pirates of the Caribbean sequel. Thus, Margot could replace Johnny Depp as she will be appearing in the next installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean movie franchise but it is not certain at the moment.
But still, it is very unlikely that she will actually replace Johnny Depp because he has portrayed the role of Captain Jack Sparrow soo perfectly that no one can ever replace him. This means that Margot Robbie could replace him but not in the strict sense of the word because the fans would never accept her as the new Jack Sparrow. However, there is a high chance that she will be playing a new character in the series.
To conclude, Margot will be landing the role as the new star of the Pirates of the Caribbean but it is very unlikely that she would actually replace Depp’s, Jack Sparrow. She might end up becoming the new star by portraying an entirely new character that fans will accept and enjoy watching as much as Jack Sparrow.
Margot Robbie’s role in the new Pirates of the Caribbean
Now you know that it is very unlikely that Margot will be replacing Johnny Depp in the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie, you must be wondering what other roles could she be portraying in the movie. What roles could she be portraying in the new movie?
Well, we are just speculating about her role in the next installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean movie because it hasn’t been confirmed that she is going to star in the franchise. But it is expected that she will surely be the star in a spin-off movie that still belongs to the entire Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Considering the area that hasn’t been covered in previous movies, there is a probability that Margot will helm an all-girl cast that focuses more on female pirates than on male ones.
Furthermore, it would be a refreshing concept for women to rule the seas in the next installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean as the world of pirates is often too focused on men. Guess what, Margot Robbie is no stranger to all-girl movies as she is one of the best candidates for an all-girl cast considering the success of Birds of Prey, which she was able to anchor pretty well. Not to forget that she is quite famous and has the star power to attract different audiences around the world.
This concept is advantageous to Disney and the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise because they will be able to move on from Johnny Depp without necessarily rebooting the entire storyline as it allows Margot Robbie to have a different story. Additionally, it could be possible that her version of the Pirates of the Caribbean can be set in the same timeline and universe as the previous movies where Jack Sparrow belongs but follows an entirely different story. In this way, she doesn’t necessarily have to replace Johnny Depp.
Will Margot Robbie affect Johnny Depp’s future with the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise?
Johnny Depp will not return to reprise his role as Captain Jack Sparrow. During the defamation trial, he was questioned by his own lawyers and he had admitted that Disney had removed him from the next installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean movie franchise just days after his ex-wife Amber Heard published the op-ed about their relationship.
Furthermore, he was cross-examined by Amber’s lawyer and they asked about a Daily Mail article that reported he was “out as Jack Sparrow”.
Johnny testified by saying, “I wasn’t aware of that, but it doesn’t surprise me. Two years had gone by of constant worldwide talk about me being this wife-beater. So, I’m sure that Disney was trying to cut ties to be safe. The #MeToo movement was in full swing at that point.”
In the court, it was revealed that Johnny’s career has suffered irreparable harm when Heard penned an op-ed in the Washington Post which alluded to Depp while not mentioning him by name. He said, “I would be a real simpleton to not think that there was an effect on my career based on Ms. Heard’s words, whether they mentioned my name or not.”
Furthermore, he also stated that Disney had continued to sell Jack Sparrow merchandise. He said, “They didn’t remove my character from the rides. They didn’t stop selling dolls of Captain Jack Sparrow. They didn’t stop selling anything. They just didn’t want there to be something trailing behind me that they’d find.”
Later, he was cross-examined by Ben Rottenborn and he asked Johnny, “The fact is, Mr. Depp if Disney came to you with $300 million and a million alpacas, nothing on this earth would get you to go back and work with Disney on a Pirates of the Caribbean film? Correct?”
Johnny confirmed that he would never reprise his role as Jack Sparrow as he replied, “That is true”.
Even the film producer Jerry Bruckheimer wasn’t optimistic about Johnny’s return because when he was asked whether he could return for the sixth film, he said, “Not at this point. The future is yet to be decided.”
It seems that Johnny won’t be reprising his role as Captain Jack Sparrow according to his testimony. However, Margot Robbie isn’t responsible for Johnny’s future with the franchise as it is not related to her. We might see her playing a character that is entirely new and fresh in the next installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean movie franchise.
