Michael was born on August 7, 1974, in Lexington, Kentucky, United States, to Donald Sutherlin Shannon and Geraldine Hine and he is a grandson of popular American entomologist Raymond Corbett Shannon.

His father Donald used to be a professor of DePaul University where he taught accounting and his mother Geraldine is a lawyer. He grew up with his father and mother even though they were divorced.

He went to New Trier Township High School for two years but after that, he enrolled in Evanston Township High School, and later he dropped out of high school.

He first appeared in a music video of an American band named Every Mother’s Nightmare. After some time he started acting on stage in Chicago and later he found A Red Orchid Theatre in 1993.

He made his debut in the film industry in the 1993 film Groundhog Day and later he started appearing in many films including Jesus’ Son, 8 Mile, Bad Boys II, Man of Steel, Cecil B.
