In 2004, John Cena briefly took a break from WWE for shooting a WWE Studios movie named, “The Marine.” The movie was Cena’s first break in Hollywood. Cena did not have any real life military experiences though.

His role in the movie “The Marine” influenced his wrestling character for years. After that, Cena began wrestling in green camouflaged shorts and started wearing dog tags on the way to the ring. The meaning behind these tags are not made public though. Cena has however said that they are special to him.

Cena’s parents are John Cena Sr. and Carol Lupien. Talking about siblings, Cena has four of them. All of the Cena brothers attended the Central Catholic High School in Lawrence, Massachusetts. After that, Cena transferred to Cushing Academy which is a private boarding school.

Cena also went to college in Massachusetts. He used to play college football as a center and was an NCAA Division III All-American football player. Cena graduated with a degree in physiology in the year 1998.

After graduating college, Cena worked a day job as a Limousine driver while trying to become a bodybuilder at the same time. He was a pro wrestling fan since a child though. And that was his dream which became a  reality later.

Cena then continued to wrestle with UPW until 2001. After that, he was given a pair of tryouts in the WWE. The people in WWE were pretty impressed by Cena’s in ring talents so, they signed him on a developmental contract. They sent Cena to OVW which was an Orlando based training center for new rookies.

During his earlier days in the WWE, he used the name “Prototype” and appeared on non-televised WWE shows. This prepared him for his big debut.

His debut came in 2002 when he accepted the challenge thrown by Kurt Angle. He lost his debut match but impressed a lot of people in the Smackdown roster back then.
