Is Dr. Donald Cline Still Alive?

Dr. Donald Cline

Netflix‘s latest documentary titled “Our Father” features the chilling controversial case involving Dr. Donald Cline, a man who used his own sperm to inseminate his patients at his Indianapolis fertility clinic. It is truly a chilling true-crime documentary that tells the disturbing narrative of fertility doctor Donald Cline.

Dr. Donald Cline was exposed by his own daughter back in 2014 with the help of Fox59 reporter Angela Ganote. After that, his daughter discovered her long list of step-siblings through DNA testing sites, and 23andME, and reached out to them via social media.

This series probably made the viewers wonder about Dr. Donald Cline and if he is still alive. So, we will be discussing whether he is still alive and the reason behind his heinous acts, and the consequences he faced afterward in today’s article.

Is Dr. Donald Cline still alive? Where is he now?

According to The Atlantic, Dr, Donald Cline is still alive today and he is living in his hometown in Indiana, as recently as 2019. He is believed to be in his 80s and he still has many supporters in the community but keeps a low profile in his hometown of Indianapolis, Indiana.

Surprisingly, he lives only a few blocks away from his children as one of his former patients, namely Liz White, told The Atlantic that “the former doctors live down the street over there, and my mum lives in town here”.

When did he open his clinic? Why did he use his own sperm?

Cline opened his clinic back in 1979 when infertility was a relatively new medical specialty, according to The Atlantic. Since then, he is believed to be inseminating women up until 1986. In the Netflix documentary, it has been shown that he used to masturbate in the neighboring bathroom before inserting his semen into his patients via artificial insemination.

Furthermore, his victims had been under impression that they were receiving either a donor sperm from a registered sperm bank, or it was the sperm of their husband. Now you must be wondering the reason behind his heinous acts.

Cline was practically begging his unacknowledged kids to keep the story secret once the secret began to come out. He insisted it would ruin his standing in his church and standing as he had no remorse. Moreover, his clinic was filled with Christian artwork and decorations, and it’s heavily implied that he had some sort of religious reason for creating lots of blonde blue-eyed children in the documentary.

So, no one knows the reason behind why he carried out such heinous acts besides the doctor himself. However, he has admitted to using his own sperm and claims he did it sparingly and all of those babies were healthy. But actually, most of the bio kids interviewed in the film state that they had similar health problems including blood clotting and autoimmune disease. Additionally, he has also insisted that there was no sexual connotation to his actions.

How many kids did he father?

Netflix has confirmed that Dr. Donald Cline has fathered 94 half-siblings and the number is likely to increase once more DNA tests are conducted.

One of the siblings #33 appeared in the documentary, namely and said that “When we get a new sibling alert, you’re praying, ‘Please don’t let it be somebody I know.’ Or, ‘Please don’t let it be somebody I dated.’”

Many of these adult half-siblings seem to want their story to be told as they didn’t get much justice in court. While the series was in production, Cline had told the director of Our FatherLucie Jourdan that the “world doesn’t need to know” about his misdeeds.

However, she disagrees with Cline as she said “The catharsis that the film is bringing these siblings, seeing their story finally told, already makes this a wild success to me. Cline did everything in his power to silence them and the making of this film,” in her director’s statement for the Our Father press notes.

Was Dr. Donald Cline punished for his crime?

According to The Atlantic, he eventually lost his license but it was after he had already retired in 2009. As a punishment, he faced a year of a suspended sentence and paid a $500 fine but did not serve jail. Now you must be really furious as to why he didn’t receive severe punishment because what he did is a heinous act and unforgivable.

Well, the documentary suggests that the judge knew the doctor and was incredibly sympathetic towards him. However, that is not confirmed yet and a lawyer in the film has already explained that Cline could not be charged with rape (or no one would do it). Many of the victims and experts explained that he had to masturbate somewhere nearby the women awaiting insemination. So, he likely approached the appointment still experiencing the physical effects of his arousal.

Many of the victims felt violated and they would never have consented to him being the sperm donor. Unfortunately, the district attorney’s office concluded that there was no “force” in the situation, as the women “consented” to being inseminated. Thus the Indiana jury did not actually consider what Dr. Cline did as a sexual violation according to Indiana state law.

However, he was busted for lying about having used his sperm to the attorney general’s office and for threatening one of his bio children with lawsuits for “slander and libel”, which led to two charges of felony obstruction of justice. As per the AP in 2017, he pled guilty to the two counts.

Finally, a bill was signed into law in 2018 to make a misrepresentation in a medical procedure a felony, and it was spearheaded by Cline’s biological children as they hope that it will protect against fertility fraud in the future. Unfortunately, 44 other fertility doctors have been discovered doing the same thing as Cline since the advent of DNA testing as revealed at the end of Our Father.
