Is Carl Nassib Gay? First Openly Gay NFL Player

If you follow the NFL then you might have caught up with the news. Just some days ago, the NFL star Carl Nassib shocked the world by coming out of the closet. He did with an Instagram post and it was a really emotional message.

In just a few sentences, the 28 year old star spoke his mind. He recorded a video clip and became the first NFL player to come out of the closet.

In the video he said, “I’ve been meaning to do this for a while now but I finally feel comfortable enough to get it off my chest.”

The video is just one minute long and it has an accompanying statement too. Nassib asserted that he had been frustrated for more than 15 years regarding his sexuality and he wanted to make announcements for a while now. He had close conversation with all his friends and family and after a really long time, he publicly stated that he is indeed a homosexual.

For people who don’t really follow the NFL, Carl Nassib is an American football player. He plays as the defensive end for the team called Las Vegas Raiders in the NFL. Before that he played college football for Penn State Nittany Lions. He got the All Aerical honors as a senior in 2015. Later, he was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in the NFL draft of 2016. He has also played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Nassib was born in the state of Pennsylvania in a place called West Chester. He went to the Malvern Preparatory school in Malvern where he played football. He used to play in the offensive position as a kid but later shifted to the defensive end. He also helped his team get a really good position in his junior and senior years. Nassib was also put in the track and field team when he was in school. But as a senior, he got the captainship of the basketball team and helped them to a really cool record. ]

College career

First of all, Nassib enrolled at Pennsylvania State University and made the Penn State football team in 2011. He did not play for his first wo years but then he started playing in 2013. He played a total of 10 games that year and in his sophomore year he played under Bill O Brian.

He had good stats. With 12 tackles and one sack he was great. As a junior, he appeared in all the 13 games and had seven tackles and one sack. He quickly became a starter for the first time in the year 2015. 

Later Nassib was also named the Defensive Player of the year in 2015. He also won the Hendricks Award for being the nation’s top amateur defensive end. His play was appreciated by many people.

Professional Career

After his great performances in College, Nassib was selected by the Cleveland Browns in the third round of the 2016 NFL draft. He was the 65th pick in that years draft. Cleveland offered him a 4 year old contract worth around $3.2 million. He also had a nice signing bonus. 

His debut came against the Philadelphia Eagles where Nassib recorded a sack as well as three tackles which was cool. This earned him a nomination for Pepsi NFL Rookie of the week. He played 14 games as a rookie and then became a starter in 2017.

Nassib was also waived by the browns on September 2 in 2018. On September 3, 2018 he moved on to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He had the career high sacks and tackles in 2018. This was probably his highest ever total going into a season. Nassib had two seasons with the Buccaneers and he started 17 games total and had good stats. 

On March 27, 2020 Nassib signed a 3 year deal worth aroud 25 million in contract money for the Las Vegas Raiders. He has been playing for the raiders since.

Humbled by NFL’s Response

In the Instagram post that he posted to come out, Nassib thanked a lot of people including the NFL, coaches, his peers and everybody else related to his life. He thanked their respect and acceptance and he even said that he was blessed to have such people in his life.

We can hear him say, “I stand on the shoulders of giants, incredible people who paved the way for me to have this opportunity” in the video.

Finally, Nassib added, “I do not know all the history behind our courageous L.G.B.T.Q. community, but I am eager to learn and to help continue the fight for equality and acceptance.”
