As a Marvel fan, you may know that there are a lot of comics about Marvel’s god of thunder Thor since August 1962 but when Stan Lee and Sam Raimi came up with an idea on making a movie about Thor around 1990 their idea was rejected. After that, we only got to see Thor in the comics and other animated movies and shows.
But as time passed Thor became one of the most loved and important characters of Marvel so it was only a matter of time till we got the official movie about Marvel’s god of thunder Thor. In this piece, we will list all the movies of MCU’s Thor with its storyline and a few other information.
Please note that we will not be writing about any other movie where Thor has a cameo or is a part of the group but if you want to read or see every movie where Thor appears then we will write about it later. So let’s get into our topic, do you know how many movies are there about Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe?
Total List of Thor Movies in MCU
There is a total of three movies about Thor in the MCU which have been released and they are as follows.
- Thor (Release Date: May 2, 2011)
- Thor: The Dark World (Release Date: November 8, 2013)
- Thor: Ragnarok (Release Date: November 3, 2017)
As mentioned this is the list of the movies which is mainly about Thor but Thor has also appeared in various other movies like Avengers and he will also appear in the upcoming movie The Guardians of the Galaxy 3.
Talking about the upcoming movies there is also an upcoming solo Thor movie called Thor: Love and Thunder which will be released on July 8, 2022, and by the way, Thor is the only superhero on Marvel to get the fourth movie. Now that we have talked about Thor’s solo movies, let’s talk about the storyline and a few additional information about the movies.
As we all know Thor’s movie is a mixed combination of mythology, superhero, and science fiction. It was released on May 2, 2011, and was directed by Kenneth Branagh. Kenneth has also worked on other various popular movies like Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Romeo and Juliet, Death on the Nile, Hamlet, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, and many others.
As many of us know that Thor is based on Norse mythology. In the movie we see that there are nine realms which are Asgard, Midgard(Earth), Jotunheim, Svartalfheim, Vanaheim, Muspelheim, Niflheim, Alfheim, and Nidavellir.
Thor is from Asgard and for many centuries Asgardians or people of Asgard have been protecting all the other realms including Earth, but in 965 AD ice giant king Laufey thinks of ruling all the nine realms and he and his army try to invade or conquer Earth first.
They try to freeze everything but Allfather Odin along with his force comes to stop them and finally, Odin drove back the giants on their own realm or planet Jotunheim. Despite losing his eye Odin manages to beat the giants and take their mighty weapon casket of ancient winters.
After that, we see the present time of 2011 where Odin has become old and now he is making his son Thor the new king and the ruler of Asgard but in the ceremony, a few giants come to steal and retake their casket. Thor gets angry and despite his father’s strict order, he takes his brother Loki and a few of his friends and starts a war against the frost giants.
As a result, Odin banishes Thor from Asgard and takes away all his powers and Odin also throws Thor’s hammer down to Earth so someone could use the hammer and Thor’s power if he/she is worthy.
I have not written about Loki here much as it is better to watch for yourself, so the movie is basically about jealousy and Thor realizing that being worthy is not about being powerful or the best but it’s about taking the responsibilities. Watch the full movie for more.
Thor: The Dark World
Thor: The Dark World is the sequel to the 2011 movie Thor and it was released on November 8, 2013, and is directed by Alan Taylor. The movie starts with the scene where Thor’s father and grandfather Bor Burison is in a war with Dark Elf as the leader of Dark Elf Malekith wants the whole universe to fall in darkness or eternal night with the powerful weapon which is known as Aether.
As mentioned Thor’s grandfather and Odin’s father Bor Burison engaged in war with the army of Malekith and his army of dark elves finally taking away an ancient force of infinite destruction, Aether. After that the scene shifts to the present day where Loki is brought back and is sentenced to imprisonment for his misdeeds on Earth.
Note: I have not written much about the story as it won’t be fun watching the movie later. Later, the Dark Elfs who have been sleeping for a long time awakens and attacks Asgard. Despite people telling that it’s one of the worst Marvel movies of all time, it has its own unique storyline that connects with the Avengers: Endgame.
Thor Ragnarok takes place after the Avengers: Age of Ultron and we get to know that after the battle of Sokovia Thor is in search of infinity stones but the scene takes place where Thor is talking to a skull while being chained but later we discover that Asgard is in danger because it is about to be destroyed by Ragnarok.
Thor was kept prisoner by the fire demon and lord of Muspelheim, Surtur and he says that after his crown meets with the eternal flame Ragnarok will begin. Soon after hearing that Thor breaks Surtur’s crown and takes it with him in Asgard.
He has not been in Asgard for a while and he finds that his brother Loki is disguised as their father Odin and chilling so Thor forces him to reveal himself and both of them come down to Earth in search of their father. Dr. Strange helps them to find their father but soon as they meet their father they discover that Odin is dying.
After Odin dies their sister the goddess of death Hela becomes free prison because of Odin’s death and she appears in front of Thor and Loki where she destroys Thor’s hammer. This is the third sequel of the movie Thor and it is the best Thor movie till now. It was released on November 3, 2017, and it is directed by Taika Waititi.
Thor: Love and Thunder
Thor: Love and Thunder is the fourth installment of the movie Thor and it is set to be released on July 8, 2022, it is being directed by the same director Taika Waititi who directed its third sequel. The movie will add more cast from Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.
The antagonist of the movie is going to be Gorr the God Butcher whose character will be portrayed by Christian Bale. Tessa Thompson will also return as Valkyrie and she also shared her custom.
