The late American actor, stand-up comedian, and producer Donald Jay Rickles mostly known by the name Don Rickles was born on May 8, 1926, in Queens, New York, United States to a Jewish family. As he was growing up he went to Newton High School from where he graduated in 1944.
After his high school graduation he joined the United States Navy and participated in World War II as a first-class seaman, he was honored for his role and was later discharged in 1946. He began to develop an interest in acting so two years after he was discharged, he went to study at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. After that, he was seen in few television shows but he wanted more than small roles. Even after struggling hard, he could not get himself a good role or work as an actor so frustrated, he started doing stand-up comedies in various clubs in Los Angeles, New York, and Miami. He used to insult his audiences so people started calling him an insult comedian. Many even believe that his method was similar to Jack E. Leonard but he refused to get influenced by him.
Around the 1950s Rickles was working in a club in Miami, Florida where he met singer and actor Frank Sinatra and both shared words, Sinatra suggested other influencers and celebrities to see or attend Rickles’ show in short Sinatra helped Rickles become famous. He did really great as a stand-up comedian as in 1968 his live comedy album Hello, Dummy! Was listed at number 54 on the Billboard 200 album chart.
In 1970 he had a role in Kelly’s Heroes as Crapgame which was noticeable and he also had a show called “The Don Rickles Show” similarly he was seen in various other television series like C.P.O. Sharkey and Hollywood Square and in the early 1980s he started to perform along with Steve Lawrence in concerts in Las Vegas and in 1985 Frank Sinatra demanded that Rickles be allowed to perform at Ronald Reagan’s second inaugural ball as Frank was asked to perform there. In 2000 he was seen in The Unit, in an episode called “Sub Conscious.” He is also the voice actor behind the popular animated movie Toy Story where he voiced Mr. Potato Head.
In his lifetime he has been awarded with numerous awards like the Primetime Emmy Award, Hollywood Walk of Fame, TV Land Award, The Comedy Awards, New York Friars Club. Rickles never thought of retiring as in 2014 he said “Why should I retire when I am in good health, I am working better than I ever have, and my audiences are great? I still enjoy it, and my energy comes alive.” in an interview, and just like he said, he frequently toured across the United States until his death.
He was 90 years old when he died on On April 6, 2017, of kidney failure. He was buried in Mount Sinai Memorial Park Cemetery. He was about to record his voice in the movie Toy Story 4 but he died before recording any dialogues but Josh Cooley asked for his family’s permission and used Rickles’ unused recordings for the movie and the movie was dedicated to his memory as well.
